We often tend to think of famous individuals as immortal, and in a way, they sort of are. Their art, music, words, films, and deeds continue to remain in this world long after they are gone. Yet, sadly, many famous people pass away at a young age, while they still have so much left to offer the world.

Fortunately, the lives of celebrities are well documented in both films and photographs, so we have a lot to remember them by. Here are some of the last photographs taken of famous people before they died with which we can remember them by.

David Bowie, 1947-2016, died at 69

David Bowie fought liver cancer for over a year, but by the time he attended the premiere of his musical “Lazarus” on December 7th, 2015, he knew that he was losing his battle against cancer. Although, no one could have predicted that it would be the last public appearance of his life.

David Bowie passed away in his home, surrounded by family. He was 69 years old. Although he is gone, he made sure to leave behind one final musical masterpiece; his last album, Blackstar.

Robin Williams, 1951-2014, died at 63

One of the greatest comedians of all time, Robin Williams, took his own life only 20 days after this photo was taken of him with his monkey, Crystal. He posted this picture on his Instagram account on his last birthday.

At the time of his death, Williams was suffering from a specific type of dementia that caused him to experience severe episodes of paranoia.

Carrie Fisher, 1956-2016, died at 60

Carrie Fisher, also famously known as Princess Leia in Star Wars, died on December 27th, 2016, just days after a fan took this picture of her in London. Carrie suffered a heart attack while on a flight to Los Angeles and died in the hospital four days after. She was 60 years old.

Freddie Mercury, 1946-1991, died at 45

A legend in the music industry and the lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury died from bronchopneumonia resulting from the AIDS virus. This is the last known photo taken of him before he took solace in the privacy of his home in his final days. He died just one day after releasing a statement confirming that he was, in fact, HIV positive and suffering from AIDS. He was only 45 years old when he died.

Jimi Hendrix, 1942-1970, died at 27

Rock guitarist, singer, and songwriter Jimi Hendrix was one of the most influential guitarists of the 1960s. Hendrix died a few days after this photograph was taken, at the Samarkand Hotel, London. He died in his sleep in his this hotel. There are still speculations regarding the cause of death, however, it was a result of an overdose of drugs and Alcohol.

Nikola Tesla, 1856-1943, died at 86

The great inventor, Nikola Tesla, best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating current (AC) electricity supply system, died on January 7th, 1943, alone in the New York Hotel. This is the last known photo of a man who, before his death, had barely anything to eat, and who’s preferred company was his favorite creatures, pigeons. Tesla died when he was 86 years old.

Alan Rickman, 1946-2016, died at 69

In January of 2016, not even five months after being diagnosed with terminal cancer of the pancreas, Alan Rickman lost his battle with this horrible disease.

This is the last photo of Alan Rickman before he died. He kept his illness extremely private, so the news of his death came as quite a shock to many. He was 69 years old when he passed away.

Muhammad Ali, 1942-2016, died at 74

The world lost so many great people in 2016. Among them was the boxing legend Muhammad Ali. His daughter, Hana, took this picture of Ali on May 22nd, 2016, just ten days before he was hospitalized with a respiratory illness. He died shortly thereafter on June 3rd at the age of 74.

Chester Bennington, 1976-2017, died at 41

Chester Bennington, the famous lead singer, and songwriter of Linkin Park was extremely open about his battle with depression. Just a few days before he committed suicide, his wife took this picture of Chester, smiling and seemingly happy. Chester was only 41 years old when he died.
